What Does Luxury Furniture Actually Cost? An Honest Guide to Where the Money Goes

Gervasoni sofa

Nobody in this trade likes to put numbers on a page, which is exactly why you should have some before you walk into a showroom.

A good European made sofa starts at around £3,000 to £4,000 for a ready to ship design, around £7,000 for a made to order Italian design, and runs past £30,000 at the top of the market. Dining tables start at roughly £2,000 and reach £5,000 to £7,000 for a made to order Italian piece, with marble tops considerably more. Beds start at £3,000 to £4,000 and dining chairs at £500 to £700 each. Add around £250 for delivery in London and six to eight weeks of lead time on most made to order pieces.

Almost everything on our website says price on enquiry. That is normal at this end of the market, because nearly every piece is made to order and the price moves with the size, the fabric, the base, the top and whether it has a motor in it. But I know what it feels like from the other side. You want to know whether this is a £5,000 conversation or a £50,000 one before you get in the car.

So here are real numbers, from the brands on our floor, as of late summer 2026. They are starting points and ballparks rather than quotes, and they will drift as collections and exchange rates change, but they are honest. And I have added the part most price guides leave out, which is where the money actually goes, what is worth spending on, and where I would quietly save.

Why “all the bells and whistles” is not what makes it expensive

The first thing worth unlearning is the idea that features drive price. People assume the recliner with the motor and the swivel and the adjustable headrest must be the expensive one, and the plain linen sofa with nothing moving on it must be the reasonable one. In this market it is usually the other way round.

Fama, our Spanish brand, has all the bells and whistles and is probably the most reasonably priced thing in the building. An armchair starts at around £700, and even with a swivel, a motor and a recline mechanism you are looking at roughly £2,000. Meanwhile the pieces that cost the most tend to be the quietest. If you think in fashion terms, they are the Loewe and Celine end of things: nothing shouting, everything in the construction. That is where I would put Flexform, a family company that has been building sofas in Meda since 1959, and it is why a Flexform sofa can reach £33,000 without a single motor in it.

What you are paying for at that level is the inside of the piece. The frame, the filling, the way the stitching sits, the little details that nobody photographs. It is not just the exterior. I only work with brands that do everything premium from the inside out, because if a factory takes shortcuts under the fabric you will not see it in the showroom, you will feel it in year four. Wanting to know what you are paying for is exactly the right instinct, so ask what is under the cover.

Sofas: where the budget actually starts

There are really three price bands on our floor, and they line up with how the piece is made and how quickly it can arrive.

Ready to ship, around £3,000 to £4,000. This is where Eichholtz sits, the Dutch brand we have just taken on. The pieces are beautifully designed but they are held in stock rather than built for you, which is why a sofa can be with you in about a week instead of six. If your timeline is short, or you want a proper piece without the made to order wait, this is the band to look at.

Made to order Italian design, from around £7,000. Papadatos is technically Greek, but it is Italian designed and it is the brand I took on precisely because a sofa at around £7,000 is a more digestible entry into this world. Fama, from Spain, starts lower again. This is the band where you choose the configuration, the fabric and the finish, and wait six to eight weeks for it to be built.

The top of the market, into the tens of thousands. Flexform is the reference point here. A large Groundpiece in a premium fabric or leather can reach £33,000. You are buying the quietest, most considered construction in the industry, and a piece that will still look right in twenty years.

Two things move the price inside every band. Real leather always costs more than fabric, sometimes a great deal more. And size: the difference between a two seater and a full corner configuration is not small. There is more on the brands themselves in our guides to the best Italian furniture brands for the family home and the best Spanish brands.

Dining tables, chairs and beds

Dining tables. A made to order Italian table starts at around £5,000. Bontempi and Cattelan Italia tables commonly sit in the £7,000 region once you have chosen the base and the top. A marble table from Meridiani can be around £14,000. If you want it quicker and simpler, Eichholtz brings a ready to ship table down to a couple of thousand pounds. The price is really a question of how much you want to tailor it: a bespoke pairing of base and top feels more personal and costs more, a stocked design is beautifully done but fixed. If you are weighing up the top material, our piece on ceramic versus marble dining tables goes into that properly.

Dining chairs. Fama starts at around £500 a chair, Cattelan Italia at around £600 to £700, and the top of the range reaches £2,000 for a single chair. That jump is workmanship: cross back stitching, contrast piping, hand finished details. I would not say the less worked chair is less beautiful, only that it is a different style. For a table of six the chairs are often a bigger line on the budget than people expect, so decide early whether they are a statement or a supporting act.

Beds. An Italian upholstered bed starts at around £3,000 to £4,000 before the mattress. Beds also carry an installation charge on top of delivery, because they arrive in pieces and need building properly, which is worth knowing before you compare a quote with an online one.

What is genuinely worth spending on

Three things, and they are the three you touch every day.

The sofa first. You and your family will sit on it every single evening for years, so it is an investment rather than a purchase, and the good ones carry you through time. Many now come with removable covers, so if what you are nervous about is the colour, that can be changed later without changing the sofa. Spend properly here.

Then the dining table, because it is where the house gathers, and then the bed. Between them those three pieces are most of a good budget, and they are the three I would never talk anyone down on.

It also helps that well made Italian furniture holds its value in a way high street pieces simply do not. Part of that is the craftsmanship, and part is that the best of it is not over designed. It is timeless rather than of the moment, which is the same reason it does not date in your living room. Italy has been the creative hub for this for generations, from glass and ceramics to architecture and fashion, and towns like Meda in Brianza have been building furniture since before any of the brands existed. That history is a large part of what you are buying.

Where I would save, and the high low approach

Accessories. I save my own money on accessories and I would tell you to do the same. We work with Scatterbox for cushions because they are really well priced for the workmanship that goes into them, and a cushion does more for a room per pound than almost anything else.

Think of it the way you dress. Nobody wears designer head to toe, or if they do it rarely looks good. People mix a designer piece with vintage and high street and it works because of how it is put together. A room is the same. Go high on the pieces that matter and come in lower elsewhere, and the mix is what makes it feel personal rather than bought.

The high low approach also solves the problem of falling in love with something. Meridiani’s René armchair is around £6,000 and some people walk in and simply want it. If you love it and you can have it, have it, and we go a little lower on some of the other pieces to make the budget work. The reason you love a piece is usually a feeling more than an aesthetic, and if a particular one is out of reach there is nearly always another brand that gives you the same feeling at a different price. I have talked people out of buying something they did not love because it was ex display and cheaper. Cheaper is not a reason to live with something for fifteen years.

The costs people forget to budget for

Delivery. Around £250 and upwards within London, more further out. Beds carry an installation charge on top. We are transparent about every charge at the start, so there is never an extra fee that was not discussed at the beginning.

Time. Most made to order pieces take six to eight weeks, some quicker, and Eichholtz about a week. Lighting can take longer, and Luxaflex blinds around five weeks. If you are having motorised blinds, get your electrician to put the power points in early. We can rush the transformers so they connect, and our fitter installs. There is a full breakdown in our post on how long luxury furniture really takes to arrive.

Compliance. Not a cost you will see on the quote, but a reason a UK price is not always the same as a European one. Upholstery sold here has to meet the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, which sometimes means an interliner or a different foam. We check that before anything is specified, and it is part of what you are paying an authorised dealer for.

One request: tell me your real budget

The single most useful thing you can do when you come in is be honest about your budget. There is always a budget, even when someone tells me there is not, and when I know it I can work within it and do something genuinely beautiful. When I do not, we end up walking through every brand in the building without ever filtering down to what you actually want, and that is a worse afternoon for both of us.

It is not a judgement in either direction. A £15,000 living room and a £60,000 living room are both good briefs. They just lead to different doors, and I would rather open the right ones. If you are working with a designer, our trade service covers how the pricing works on projects.

Come and sit on things. The showroom is in High Barnet, easy from anywhere in North London or Hertfordshire, open by appointment seven days a week. Bring the room measurements and a number you are comfortable with, and we will build from there.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a luxury sofa cost in the UK?

Around £3,000 to £4,000 for a ready to ship European design, around £7,000 for a made to order Italian designed sofa, and up to £33,000 at the very top of the market for a brand like Flexform in a premium fabric or leather. Size, configuration and real leather are what move the price within each band.

What budget do I need to furnish a living and dining room properly?

It depends on the brands, but a realistic starting point for a sofa, a dining table and six chairs from made to order European brands is £15,000 to £20,000, and a scheme built around Flexform or Meridiani can reach £50,000 and beyond. Tell us the number you are comfortable with and we will design within it.

Why is Italian furniture so expensive?

Because of what is inside it. The frame, the filling, the stitching and the hand finished details are where the cost sits, not the features. It is also why Italian furniture holds its value far better than high street pieces, and why a well chosen piece still looks right twenty years later.

What is worth spending money on and where can I save?

Spend on the sofa, the dining table and the bed, the pieces you use every day. Save on accessories such as cushions and smaller decorative pieces, where well priced brands deliver excellent workmanship. Mixing high and low is what makes a room feel personal.

How much is delivery and installation?

Around £250 and upwards within London, with an additional installation charge for beds and for fitted items such as blinds. All charges are agreed at the start so there are no surprises later.

Why is everything price on enquiry?

Because nearly every piece is made to order and the price changes with the size, fabric, base, top and mechanism you choose. A single list price would be wrong for most configurations. The ranges in this guide are honest starting points so you know roughly where a piece sits before you ask.
