Italy tends to dominate the conversation around European furniture, but Spain has its own serious tradition, often family-run, comfort-led and built for everyday living. Two of the best Spanish furniture brands for family homes are both available through MSI London: Fama, whose sofas are designed explicitly around family life, and Vondom, known for sculptural indoor-outdoor design.
When people picture luxury European furniture, they usually picture Italy first. Spain rarely gets the same billing, and that’s a shame, because some of the best Spanish furniture brands make genuinely family-friendly pieces that Italian design rarely matches for everyday practicality. Where Italian design often leads with prestige and architectural tailoring, the Spanish brands we’re drawn to lead with something quieter and, for a family home, arguably more useful: comfort, practicality and a real understanding of how people actually live.
MSI London is now an official Fama dealer, which felt like the right moment to write properly about Spanish furniture for the family home. Clients can order from the full Fama range today, and our first showroom pieces arrive in September. Vondom, the Valencia brand we introduced earlier this year, completes the Spanish story. Both are available through our High Barnet showroom, convenient for North London and Hertfordshire, and both, in different ways, are built for real life.
Why Spanish Furniture Deserves More Attention
Spain has a long, deeply rooted furniture-making culture, particularly around towns like Yecla in Murcia and the design hub of Valencia. Much of it is built on family businesses, companies passed down through generations, where the people making the decisions have grown up in the trade. That shows in the furniture itself. It tends to be warm rather than showy, practical rather than precious, and designed around comfort as the starting point rather than an afterthought.
For a family home, that philosophy matters. A sofa isn’t a sculpture to be admired from across the room. It’s where you’ll watch films, where children will climb, where you’ll fall asleep on a Sunday afternoon. The best Spanish brands design for exactly that, and two of them stand out for us.
Fama: Sofas Designed Around Family Life
Few furniture brands are as openly built around family living as Fama. Founded in 1972 in Yecla, in the Murcia region, a historic centre of Spanish upholstery, Fama started with just three workers and has grown into one of Spain’s most technically advanced sofa manufacturers, while staying a family business at heart.
What we like is the honesty of their design philosophy. Fama starts from a simple observation: most people don’t just sit on their sofas, they lie on them, curl up on them and live on them, alone, as a couple, or as a whole family. Every design decision follows from that. It’s an unglamorous starting point, and it’s exactly why the sofas work so well in a real home.
Why I chose Fama
The Fama story is personal for me. When I was about eleven and learning to make my own clothes, there was a furniture shop on my route that always had a Fama sofa in the window. I believe it was a version of the Arianne Love, one of the most iconic designs the brand makes. I wanted that sofa for years.
My background is in fashion, and particularly textiles. I used to make my own prints, and I love colour, and that is exactly what drew me back to Fama when I came into this business. It is different from the sleek, contemporary Italian style. The prints are amazing, the colours are joyful, and there is a casualness to the silhouettes that I have not found anywhere else.
The agent who looks after Bontempi for us also represents Fama, and over time he has come to know my style well. Then I went for lunch with the owner of Fama, and we got on so well that the decision felt easy. I knew that if I took the brand on, we would have a genuinely close working relationship. More than anything, I love the product. Furniture for the home should have an element of fun, because your home is where you express yourself, and Fama understands that better than almost anyone.
Fama Sofas at the MSI London Showroom
I have ordered three Fama pieces for the showroom floor, and each one says something about why I took the brand on. The first is a sofa in a print I had wanted for ages, of a couple embracing. The second is a recliner in butter yellow. I am a sucker for butter yellow; I own a butter yellow trench coat and butter yellow shoes, so when I saw the leather I had to have it. Recliners are usually ugly, but this one is sleek and clever, and Fama does recliners so well. We chose a completely plain leather to show off how beautiful their colours are. The third is a chair with its own little side table attached. I studied fine art and I love painting, so we chose the Picasso fabric. It is iconic, it looks amazing on the chair, and the owner of Fama has the same piece in his own hallway.

The pieces arrive in September, after the European summer shutdown. In the meantime, the catalogues are on their way, along with a trolley of full-size fabric swatches so clients can properly feel the materials. We can also sit down together and build your exact sofa in Fama’s 3D configurator, so you can see the configuration and fabric before anything is ordered. Lead times are typically eight to ten weeks, a little longer over the summer months, and orders can be placed now ahead of the showroom pieces arriving.
Arianne Love: the modular family favourite
Arianne Love is Fama’s most iconic model, now in thousands of homes across more than seventy countries. It’s a low-seated modular system built from independent modules, square, rectangular, round and hexagonal, that combine to suit the shape of your living room. The low profile makes it inherently relaxed and family-friendly, and the reversible arm option means it can be configured to sit left or right, so it adapts if you rearrange a room or move home. It’s the kind of sofa a family grows into rather than out of.

Teseo: a sofa designed to last
Teseo is built around what Fama calls a circular design: every element of the sofa, covers, cushions, elastics and seat suspension, is replaceable. For a family, that’s genuinely practical. Rather than replacing an entire sofa because one part has worn, individual components can be swapped, which extends the life of the piece considerably. It also carries Fama’s patented “Cloud Sitting” suspension for the seat, available in a premium and a more accessible basic version.
Paradis: comfort for family film nights
Paradis goes further than a conventional pull-out sofa. Its seat extends outward via a fully motorised system, turning an ordinary sofa into a deep lounging area at the touch of a button, ideal for a family piling on together for a film. An articulated low backrest adjusts to suit the moment, from upright and supportive to fully relaxed.
The feature that matters most: removable covers
Across many of its ranges, Fama offers removable, washable covers, and honestly, in a home with children or pets, this is the single most useful thing a sofa can have. Being able to take a cover off and clean it, rather than living in fear of the first spill, is what makes a light-coloured sofa realistic for a family at all. Fama also offers an enormous choice of fabrics, so the same model can be specified to feel formal or relaxed, hard-wearing or soft.
A note of honesty, because it’s how we prefer to work: as with any sofa, the comfort and durability you get depends heavily on choosing the right model, fabric and configuration for how you’ll actually use it. That’s exactly where seeing the pieces in person, and having someone talk you through the options, makes the difference. That guidance, alongside our own delivery and after-sales support, is part of what MSI London adds on top of the brand itself.
Vondom: Sculptural Spanish Furniture Design for Indoors and Out
Based in Valencia, Vondom is the other Spanish brand we’ve brought into the showroom, and it solves a problem we see constantly in high-end homes: outdoor furniture is usually the weakest part of the scheme. A family invests carefully in sofas, lighting and finishes indoors, only for the garden or terrace to feel like an afterthought.
Vondom closes that gap. Working with internationally recognised designers, it produces sculptural seating, tables, planters and lighting with a level of finish closer to indoor furniture than typical garden pieces, but built from durable, weather-resistant materials made to handle sun, rain and daily family use. Our own first edit focused on the Africa and Gatsby collections, chosen precisely because they feel refined up close while sitting naturally within a garden rather than overpowering it.

Family-friendly by design
For families who treat the garden or terrace as an extension of the home, Vondom’s durability is the point. Many pieces are made using rotational moulding, which produces seamless, robust forms without weak joins, and the materials are built to resist UV fading and weather. There’s a sustainability angle too: much of the range is fully recyclable, and Vondom’s wider work includes pieces made from recycled plastics. It’s outdoor furniture you don’t have to worry about, which, with children and a garden, is exactly what you want. See Vondom at MSI London.
Italian vs Spanish Furniture for Families
The simplest way to think about it: Italian furniture often leads with design language and prestige, while Spanish brands like Fama lead with comfort and everyday practicality. Neither is better. They suit different priorities. A family drawn to the tailored, architectural look of an Italian sofa and one drawn to the deep, cover-washable comfort of a Spanish one are simply weighting design and daily practicality differently.
In many homes the honest answer is both, an Italian dining table paired with a Spanish family sofa, for instance. If you’re weighing up the Italian side, read our companion guide to the best Italian furniture brands for the family home.
What To Look For In A Family Sofa
Whichever brand you’re drawn to, a few practical things separate furniture that survives family life from furniture that struggles with it:
- Removable, washable covers: the most useful feature in any home with children or pets, and a real Fama strength.
- Modular configuration: seating you can arrange around your room and adapt as your family changes.
- Sofa-bed or extending functionality: useful for guests and for family lounging, as with Fama’s Paradis.
- Replaceable parts: a sofa where components can be swapped, like Teseo, lasts far longer than one you replace whole.
- Outdoor durability: for garden and terrace pieces, look for UV-resistant, weatherproof materials, as with Vondom’s ranges.
