Best Italian Furniture Brands for the Family Home | MSI London

Italian design has real prestige, but in the family homes we furnish across North London, the prestige only matters if the piece survives a normal week.

Looking for the best Italian furniture brands for a family home? Seven stand out for us. MSI London is an authorised dealer for six of them, and we also carry the seventh, Saba, in the showroom.

Flexform, deep modular seating for family living rooms · Cattelan Italia, hard-wearing ceramic dining tables · Meridiani, calm and tailored living-room pieces · Porada, solid walnut craftsmanship · Bontempi, practical extending tables · Gervasoni, relaxed slipcovered sofas · Saba, playful modular design for children’s spaces

Italian furniture has a reputation that precedes it, beautiful, prestigious, the name you reach for when a room needs to feel considered. All of that is true, and it’s part of why so many of the families we work with in High Barnet, North London and Hertfordshire ask for it by name. But the reason we keep recommending it isn’t the label. It’s what sits underneath: solid frames, high-grade upholstery, and finishes built to take years of genuine daily use, not just a photograph. That is the real test of the best Italian furniture brands in a family home, whether the pieces still look right after a decade of Sunday lunches and film nights.

The old idea of a formal front room, kept pristine for guests, has largely gone. Modern family homes are open-plan and multi-functional, with cooking, dining, homework and children’s play often happening in the same room. That is a lot to ask of the furniture, which has to anchor a space elegantly and still survive the next morning. The seven brands below have answered that without compromising on design, and each is available through MSI London’s Barnet showroom.

Why the Best Italian Furniture Brands Suit Family Life

Among Italian furniture brands UK buyers can access, availability and lead times vary a great deal from one house to the next, which is exactly why we work directly with the makers rather than ordering blind. MSI London holds authorised dealer status for six of the seven brands in this guide: Flexform, Cattelan Italia, Meridiani, Porada, Bontempi and Gervasoni. The seventh, Saba, is a brand we carry because families respond to it so strongly, and we’d rather be straightforward about that distinction than blur it.

Flexform

Based in Meda, the heart of Italian upholstery, Flexform is known for understated, lived-in comfort rather than showy statement design. Deep seats, softly tailored upholstery and modular systems that can be configured around the shape of your room. Its Groundpiece sofa is a modern classic for exactly this reason, a low, deep profile that encourages a genuinely relaxed, lounging posture rather than perching formally. See Flexform at MSI London.

Flexform’s Groundpiece, deep, modular, feather-down seating built for how families really relax.

Flexform is my first recommendation for families. A lot of Italian design is quite formal, and Flexform set out to be different, thinking about comfort, relaxation and the way people actually live now. The Groundpiece is their most iconic product for a reason. Its cushions are filled with feather down, with a firmer option if you prefer, and the seat is deep enough to genuinely encourage you to relax rather than sit upright. The way we use sofas has changed, so many clients now have media units and cinema rooms at home, and Flexform suits that perfectly. For a family movie night it is almost like being in bed, except you can sit together on a sofa and eat.

For families, the modularity is the real advantage, because sections can be arranged, added to or reconfigured as a family grows or moves house. Flexform’s upholstery is also fully removable across its collections, so it can be professionally cleaned or replaced, which extends the life of the piece considerably. A sofa you can actually maintain is a sofa that stays with you.

Cattelan Italia

In a family home, the dining table takes more abuse than almost any other piece: dinners, homework, laptops, art projects. Cattelan Italia, founded in 1979 in the Veneto region, is our go-to for exactly this, largely because of its mastery of ceramic and sintered-stone tops. See Cattelan Italia at MSI London.

Cattelan Italia Scott Keramik dining table, hard-wearing Italian design for family homes at MSI London
Cattelan Italia’s Scott table with a hard-wearing Keramik top, built for a busy family dining room.

This is not theory for us. If you spill something on real marble, you need to react instantly, and a family dinner table is usually too chaotic for that. Cattelan’s Keramik tops give you the look of marble, engineered remarkably thin, and they wipe clean with a cloth. I know clients who have had their Keramik tables for over fifteen years and they still look brand new. I especially love the biscuit-shaped tops, rounded at the ends, which also removes hard corners at child height.

In the showroom we currently have a full Cattelan dining setup, with a Tyron base table, a matching sideboard and a console. It shows something useful: you can buy several Cattelan pieces and create a coherent look without it ever feeling like a bought set, because the surfaces and finishes can all be customised. With the table we have two Ronda dining chairs, and everyone loves them. The leather is ruched, which is something you would expect in a soft fabric rather than leather. Leather can feel cold, and the ruching softens it and makes it tactile.

Meridiani

Meridiani brings a calm, tailored quality to living and bedroom furniture: muted tones, natural materials and a disciplined, architectural restraint that ages gracefully rather than dating. For a family home, that timelessness is quietly practical, because pieces still feel right years later, working as a considered backdrop to a busy household rather than demanding attention. See Meridiani at MSI London.

On our floor, the piece that shows this best is a green Meridiani swivel chair. The form is simple, but it has a really strong presence because of how cocooning it is. It’s bulbous and architectural at the same time, it swivels, and everyone who walks into the showroom goes towards it.

Porada

Established in 1948 in Brianza, Porada is defined by solid-wood craftsmanship, particularly its work with walnut. Its tables, chairs and storage are built around real timber joinery using time-honoured techniques, which makes them both beautiful and genuinely robust, the kind of pieces that get passed down rather than replaced. See Porada at MSI London.

The Porada four-poster bed in our showroom is the clearest example of that craftsmanship. You cannot see the joinery lines. The whole bed feels as though it has been made from a single piece of timber, which is so smart. We also have a Porada storage divider, and the reaction to it is always the same: the workmanship is worth the money.

Bontempi

Bontempi is one of the most practical brands on this list for everyday family living, sitting at the intersection of Italian design and genuinely clever, space-conscious engineering. It’s best known for extending dining tables and versatile, adaptable seating, and a table that seats four day to day but opens to eight when family visit is a genuinely useful thing in a busy home. See Bontempi at MSI London.

Many of its tables use centralised pedestal bases rather than corner legs, which means more legroom and fewer bruised knees around a full table. Tops are available in hard-wearing materials including ceramic and anti-scratch glass, and the extension mechanisms are designed to be smooth enough for one person to operate. Bontempi also spans a broad range of finishes and price points, making it an accessible way into Italian design without compromising on build quality.

Our newest Bontempi display is a personal favourite. The dining table has a base that appears to float, one form hovering over another, almost like a chocolate wrapper mid-unwrap. We already had plenty of Keramik in the showroom and nothing in wood, so I chose the display in walnut, olive and terracotta. I wanted it to have a Wes Anderson look. Being Indian, I’m drawn to those warm, traditional tones, which remind me of Mughal design and feel beautiful and luxurious to me. I like having a little of my culture in certain corners of the showroom.

Gervasoni

Founded in 1882 and creatively shaped for years by designer Paola Navone, Gervasoni redefined luxury as something relaxed, informal and exceptionally practical, which makes it a natural fit for family homes. Its celebrated Ghost collection is the clearest example, a soft, inviting sofa wrapped in an oversized, loosely draped slipcover with visible tailored stitching. See Gervasoni at MSI London.

Gervasoni’s Ghost sofa, a relaxed, launderable slipcover with an easy British-cottage feel.

Countryside chic is coming back around. A lot of my generation want character in their homes again, because everything can start to feel too clean, too minimal and too contemporary. The Ghost sofa on our showroom floor captures that perfectly. It is Italian, but it has that British cottage, Soho Farmhouse look. And because the covers can be changed so easily, one sofa can become several, light and airy for summer, cosy for winter, depending on the season or simply how you feel.

We also have a low Gervasoni armchair in bouclé that swivels. It is one of the most tactile pieces in the showroom, and almost nobody walks past it without touching it. That slipcover principle is the whole point of the brand for a family home: covers pull off easily and can be laundered. So you can genuinely enjoy pale, light-coloured upholstery, even white linen, without the constant anxiety about the first stain.

Saba

Saba is the brand I would point at for families who want their furniture to have a sense of play. The Pixel sofa on our showroom floor is one of my favourite pieces, and whenever children come into the showroom they go straight to it. It sits low, it is built from modular blocks that can be arranged in specific ways, and kids seem to love it because it looks a bit like Minecraft. See Saba at MSI London.

That playfulness is the point, but it is backed by proper Italian manufacturing. Pixel can be rebuilt as a family changes, and it does not take itself too seriously while still being beautifully made. For an open-plan family space that needs to work hard and still feel joyful, it is a strong choice, and one we’re glad to have on the floor.

A note of honesty, because it’s how we prefer to work: every one of these brands runs its ordering differently, and that only becomes clear once you’ve worked with them for a while. Almost everything is customisable, so an order can carry dozens of features and options, and I check it several times before the purchase order ever goes out. The invoice comes back in an Italian format and I check that again too. A wrong fabric code or finish reference caught at this stage costs nothing. Caught after production has started, it costs weeks, which is exactly the kind of detail we’d rather absorb than pass on to a client.

The Engineering Behind the Beauty

It’s worth pausing on why these brands hold up where cheaper furniture doesn’t, because it isn’t marketing, it’s material science. On dining surfaces, sintered stone and advanced ceramics are engineered to a density that makes them essentially non-porous, so spills sit on the surface rather than soaking in, and they’re hard enough that ordinary cutlery won’t score them. That is why a ceramic-topped table can still look flawless a decade in.

In upholstery, the better Italian makers build seat cores from high-resilience foam that recovers its shape once you stand up, which is what prevents the permanent sagging you see in heavily used family sofas. Wrap that in a performance fabric treated to resist stains, add the ability to remove and clean covers, and you have seating designed for the reality of family life rather than the fantasy of an untouched showroom. That is the difference between furniture that survives a decade and furniture that looks tired in two years.

What to Look for in Family Furniture

  • Removable, cleanable upholstery: the single biggest factor in how a sofa copes with children and pets. Flexform and Gervasoni are strong here.
  • Modular seating: sections you can reconfigure give flexibility as needs change and make an awkward room easier to furnish. Saba’s Pixel is the most playful example.
  • Extendable dining tables: a table that expands for guests but sits compact day to day earns its place, and Bontempi and Porada both excel here.
  • Hard-wearing surfaces: ceramic, sintered stone and solid wood handle spills, heat and daily wear far better than delicate finishes, as Cattelan Italia and Porada show.
  • Timeless over trend-led: furniture you’ll still love in ten years is more economical and more sustainable than pieces that date fast, which is where Meridiani’s restraint pays off.

In many homes the honest answer is a mix of traditions rather than one country alone, an Italian dining table paired with a Spanish family sofa, for instance. If you’re weighing that up, read our companion guide to the best Spanish furniture brands for the family home, featuring Fama and Vondom.
